Location

Twenty minutes down, and the mountain to yourself

Acorn Ridge is in Shagbark, a gated community off Highway 321 in the Waldens Creek area west of Pigeon Forge — close to everything you came for, without living on the Parkway.

The trade-off

Close enough. Far enough away.

The Pigeon Forge Parkway is where most of the Smokies’ attractions actually are, and being an hour from it is a real cost when somebody wants ice cream at nine at night. Being on it is worse — traffic, lights and noise every time you leave the cabin.

Shagbark sits between the two. The Island is twenty-two minutes from the cabin door and Dollywood twenty-seven. Turn the other way and you are at the quiet Wears Valley entrance to the national park in about half an hour.

Shagbark also has something no other community around here does: a staffed gate, twenty-four hours a day, every day. Not a keypad — people.

Roads and parking

What the drive up is actually like

The road to the cabin is paved, and so is most of the twenty-two miles the association maintains. Some of the back roads in the community are gravel, but you will not be on them getting here. They climb and turn, because this is a mountain, and a normal car handles them fine in ordinary weather.

In winter the association plows, salts and clears the roads, but ice on a steep grade is still ice. If there is snow or ice, all-wheel drive is the only choice — not a recommendation, a requirement. Two-wheel drive will not get you up.

Parking at the cabin is a private driveway, paved and level, with room for six vehicles, level with the ground-floor entry. Nobody is left parked down on the road — which is worth more here than it sounds.

Simplified map of the Shagbark community The staffed guard house sits at the southern entrance on North Clear Fork Road. That road runs north to a junction with Hatcher Top Road, which runs east past the community office and pool toward Black Walnut Flats Road, Balsam Slopes Road and Overholt Trail. West of the entrance road are Emerald Springs Loop, Sugar Maple Loop, Stepping Stone Drive, Headrick Lead and High Top Loop, with two ponds. The mailboxes are north of the junction. Approach from the Pigeon Forge Parkway is 2.5 miles on Wears Valley Road, 3.1 miles on Waldens Creek Road, then 0.06 miles on Clear Fork Road. Arriving

The gate, and how it works

Shagbark is gated with security staff on duty around the clock, trained and certified by the State of Tennessee. Nobody comes through without a reason to be there, which is a large part of why it feels the way it does.

Because of that, arrival takes one extra step: we register your party with the association before you travel, and the guard issues your pass when you pull up. Give us the names and the number of cars when you book and it is handled — you just give your name at the gate.

What we send you after you book

The exact address, your gate registration, turn-by-turn directions from your direction of travel, and the door code. We keep those private until a reservation is confirmed.

Included with the community

There is a whole park down the road

Shagbark keeps a common area with a pool, courts, a playground and a disc golf course laid out along the creek. It is a short drive from the cabin and most guests never realize it is there until we tell them.

Pool

Open 9am to 9pm, Memorial Day through Labor Day.

Tennis & pickleball

Courts at the community park, first come first served.

Basketball court

At the same park, beside the courts.

Disc golf

A full course laid out along the creek. Bring discs or ask us.

Playground

Beside the community center, with the pavilion next to it.

Picnic pavilion

Covered tables. Good for a big group dinner outdoors.

Park, fitness trail & dog park

A manicured park along the creek with a walking trail.

Cornhole

Set up at the park through the warm months.

The one cost that is not ours

The association charges a common-area fee for guests using these facilities. It is already included in your quote — there is nothing to pay at the gate and nothing to work out later. The price you are shown is the price you pay.

Pool season runs Memorial Day to Labor Day, 9am to 9pm.

Nearby

What is worth the drive

Great Smoky Mountains National Park

The Wears Valley entrance at Metcalf Bottoms is the closest way in and the least busy — thirty-one minutes. Little River Road from there runs to Elkmont, past Laurel Falls (closed until 2027) and on to Gatlinburg.

Pigeon Forge & Dollywood

The Island in twenty-two minutes, Dollywood in twenty-seven. Dinner shows, go-karts, the outlet malls and most of the restaurants. Longer once you are on the Parkway in peak season.

Townsend and Cades Cove

West on 321 and you are in Townsend in thirty-six minutes, which is the calm end of everything. The Cades Cove entrance is fifty-one — go early, and go on a weekday.

Where we send people ourselves

The Appalachian at Dancing Bear in Townsend for the meal you plan the evening around. Boss Hog’s in Sevierville when you want barbecue and no ceremony. Howard’s in Gatlinburg, which has been there long enough to have earned it.

Those are ours. If you would rather go by the numbers, five places rated highly on both Tripadvisor and Yelp are set out with drive times measured from our own front door.
